Office 365: Goodbye FindTime

On October 1 Microsoft replaced FindTime with “Poll for a Time to Meet.”

Unfortunately Poll for a Time to Meet does not have all the features that FindTime had.

At JDB Consultants, we used FindTime extensively to schedule with clients.  Because a meeting poll could be inserted directly into an existing email thread the system worked as the people at the other end were already engaged in the conversation.  Now you have a create a new message thread and hope everyone is looking for it.  In initial tests I have found that, unlike FindTime,  “poll for a Time to Meet” (I don’t really like the new name either) does not seem to get good results on answers.  A much higher number of requests go unanswered.

FindTime notified the originator when people voted on the poll.  The new software does not.  This means you have to manually go check for vote status until everyone has voted.

The previous meeting poll had an Outlook add-in that let you schedule right from Outlook.  That is also gone.  Features in the add-in, like moving times in your calendar to the end of the list and showing “working hours” only (with an option to show other hours), are also gone.  In my 1st try I scheduled a meeting for 3 AM the same day I was doing the planning.  But at least the web site notified me that I had a meeting in the past before sending.  FindTime would not have even displayed a time in the past.

Hopefully Microsoft will revive the FindTime features including:
1) Add-in for Outlook 2016 to insert into a ongoing email
2) Option to not reserve times in advance
3) Notices when people vote
4) Email link to the meeting at setup so it can be clicked on from Outlook 2016.

In Summary, I am disappointed that Microsoft downgraded an App I thought was a real gem.  It worked great and the only explanation given was that it was now available to more users because it’s web only.

To get started in Outlook, follow these steps:

Just about anywhere you go these days there seems to be plenty of available public Wi-Fi. And while this is massively convenient if you’re away from your home or office, there can be harmful security risks lurking on the other side of the access form. Make sure you’re prepared the next time you need to get work done while on the go – it could just save your business.

We’ve highlighted the top 4 challenges people face when using public Wi-Fi networks, and shared how best to stay safe.

Challenge #1 – Not all public Wi-Fi networks are created equal

For example, that tempting “Free Airport Wi-Fi” network in the background is potentially more exposed than a Wi-Fi network provided by one of the coffee shops, stores, or retailers in the airport. Your best option is to find networks from a specific location, ideally with a password that you must request, or hidden SSIDs, instead. You’ll appreciate the slight increase in security as well as the likely improved performance.

Challenge #2 – Use approved remote access tools

VPN tools are great because they have encryption, and they are user-initiated so you have to be purposely trying to connect to your network remotely. However, you have probably experienced VPN connection failure, or at least time-outs, on more than one occasion. That’s why you may want to consider using DirectAccess.  DirectAccess connections are established by the machine – not the user – so they are secure and authenticated whenever the DirectAccess client has an active Internet connection. Meaning you can spend more time getting your work done, and less time with Help Desk trying to diagnose the issue.

Challenge #3 – Use Multi-Factor Authentication

You’re probably already using Multi-Factor Authentication for different sites and applications. How many times have you clicked “forgotten password” and you get a reset code sent to your cell phone? It’s a simple step to help increase security and identity to ensure that it’s actually “you” when trying to access your business environment remotely.
And it’s pretty straightforward to implement as well with Microsoft Multi-Factor Authentication available in Microsoft Azure Active Directory Premium.

Benefits include:
1. Reduced probability of an Internet attacker gaining access to an account, resulting in fewer security breached
2. Safeguard access by mobile apps, phone calls, and text messages
3. Reduced risk, and meet compliance requirements

Challenge #4 – Turn off Wi-Fi when not in use

One simple way to protect your confidential information whilst in public is to turn off Wi-Fi when you’re not using it. If you don’t need to be online, don’t connect. Or do as much offline as possible and connect only when you really need to. One additional up side… it actually saves your battery too!
And remember, never leave your device unattended while you go grab that latte.

The Dick Tracy watch has finally arrived.  Cellular is the big win!  Take calls, listen to music, and you don’t need your iPhone with you to use the new features.  Great new workout features.  And the size is same.

AppleTV 4K:

4K TV support and live sports are the big wins.


Apple announces 3 new iPhones

iPhone 8 and 8 Plus:   Front and back glass finish, louder speakers,  faster CPU,  12 MP camera in the iPhone 8. 2 new cameras in the iPhone 8 Plus.  Augmented Reality abilities.  Wireless charging.

iPhone X:  Everything in the iPhone 8 Plus and…  All Screen no Home button.  Redesigned navigation and app switching.  New  “Super Retina Display”  OLED Display.  Facial Recognition (Face ID).  Better camera (too many features to list here).

The iPhone 8s, AppleTV 4K and iWatch 3 will be out in September.  The iPhone X will be out in November.  I’m curious if the iPhone 8 will do well with the iPhone X so close behind it.
